It’s The Small Things That Count

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I received an email out of the blue this Christmas that reminded me of the importance of small things… even when you don’t realize it.

Almost a year ago now, I attended a business workshop in London.

It was a hot muggy day, the trains were running late, I had childcare issues before I left, and I arrived feeling more than a little frazzled.

Not only this but the majority of attendees at this workshop failed to turn up. So of the 12 expected, there were only two of us – myself and another attendee.

The promoter was clearly not expecting this. He had prepared a day of exercises and strategies aimed at 12 people… but he battled on valiantly regardless.

I attend many such events as part of my business education. Some events are brilliant, filled with ‘aha’ moments.
Others are ‘ok’ but nothing to shout about.

This workshop was of the latter variety – and to be honest, I had all but forgotten it.

Except… that nearly 12 months on, I received an email in my mail box from that other single attendee.

He was writing to thank me for the hug I gave him, and for helping to make a difference after a nightmare period in his life.

“Your words and the hugging gave me power to come through. You donĀ“t have to understand this, but it helped me,” he said.

Unknown to me, this business owner was going through a huge trauma in his life.

I have to say he hid it well – I hadn’t a clue at the time.

But it struck me when I got his note how important warmth is… how smiles and hugs – listening – can make such a huge difference.

And yes, it’s the small things that count every single day… even at dull business workshops on sweltering days when you’d much rather be somewhere else.
